September 18th - We Started Roofing the House

Jim came over today and we started roofing the house.  This area is over the master suite and the original bedroom and bathroom:

Jim & Gerry had the first 3 rows of paper laid before I could get the camera and get up on the roof:

The 2 skylights were installed yesterday.  They will provide light into the attic for my storage area:

Jim...hard at work:

Jim showed Kenny how to install the shingles:

We finished about 2/3 of the master suite roof area and got started on the roof over the great room:

September 13th & 14th - Electrical Panel Was Installed

The electrical panel was installed just outside the master bath.

The inspector was over today and approved the placement of the electrical panel so Gerry can start pulling the wire.  He also gave the go-ahead to install the roof shingles on the house.

September 11th - Primer and Plumbing

Please take a moment to remember the people who's lives were lost 10 years ago during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York.

God Bless America, My home sweet home.

Gerry installed the drain pipes for the half-bath sink.

Raymond painted primer on the X plywood sheets that will be used to box-in the eaves.  Gerry will cut the plywood to the correct width for installation.  (There was no paint on his short, shirt or shoes when he arrived in the morning!)

He also primered the studio barn doors.

September 10th - Unexpected Rain

We heard the thunder start around 6:45 AM and the rain came around 7:15 AM; unfortunately, Gerry was not home by then and the house does not have a water/weather-proof roof.  The roof is covered with plywood but there are 1/8" gaps between the sheets to allow for expansion.  The water flowed easily downward, through the gaps, and into the house.  I went around and moved Gerry's tools and paperwork to try to keep them dry.  Fortunately, the house plans were in my closet area which already has the floor for the storage attic above installed...that helped keep the closet area dry.

Once Gerry got home, Jonathan--our neighbor from across the street--came over and helped Gerry cover the roof with plastic.  Thank goodness for good neighbors!

Another neighbor joked that he thought the days (years!) of plastic on our roof were over!

Once the rain stopped Gerry pulled the plastic off to dry out the roof.  Then he recovered the roof just in case the rain came back.

I spent a couple hours vacuuming up as much of the water as possible.  Then we set up fans to help circulate the air and dry out the floors and the storage area above.

September 2nd & 3rd - Roofing the Studio

Jim and Gerry started roofing the front side of the studio on Friday afternoon.  They installed the metal flashing and got a start on the slate-colored shingles:

By mid-afternoon Saturday, Jim had finished nailing the shingles on the front side:

Then they started the back side which had to be covered with rolled roofing because of the shallow slope.  First, 2 layers of the 30-lb peel-and-stick underlayment (I helped stomp down the air bubbles):

Then the final layer of peel-and-stick white composite shingle material was laid:

Stop for medical treatment...Jim cut himself while trimming the roll:

The backside is done by early evening.  The white color will help keep the studio cool by reflecting the heat:

Jim came back Sunday morning and finished adding the ridge caps.

Perfect timing because it started to rain Sunday afternoon...large drops for a short time.  Then at 2:00 AM Monday morning we both woke to the sound of pounding rain.  Gerry went out to the original garage and bedroom to make sure everything was covered in plastic.  Fortunately, the rain only  lasted about 10-15 minutes.

Thank you, Jim!
